Twitter Plans Massive Clean-up With New Obscene Content Warning

Twitter is wholesome, healthy, and filled with not-safe-for-work (NSFW) content. The problem with that is that there are no clear lines separating the types of content at the moment. All that is set to change.

Twitter Content WarningTwitter is planning to add a designation that will let users flag content as inappropriate. Under the new system, a flag will trigger a warning message that will help people make an informed decision before clicking a link. The goal is to save people the trauma or trouble of following a link to something that is downright inappropriate or in direct violation of their work policies.

According to Twitter representative, Carolyn Penner, users will be able to flag their own content, as well as those of other users. All video and photo links will be subject to the new warning feature, and third party sites like Instagram and TwitPic, will have to update their streams.

So far users seem quite receptive about the new feature, which is very good news for Twitter. At least they won’t have to worry about user revolts. Given the obvious security vulnerabilities with the platform, the last thing Twitter needs is an upset user base.

The new feature isn’t fully on stream yet, but developers have been given the necessary details on how to incorporate it, using the Twitter API. Users will have to wait a while before things are fully functional, so the word on the web is that one should still “click carefully”.

Do you think the new feature will help make Twitter handle obscenity? Have your say in the comments below.
